Fruit trees: Zeynep recognised as the Forerunner in Design in Ornamo’s 2024 awards

We’re very proud to share that Falay Transition Design’s founder, Zeynep Falay von Flittner, was recently named as the recipient of Ornamo’s prestigious Forerunner prize, for being at the forefront of systemic change.

Ornamo is the oldest and largest community for design professionals in Finland, and each year present a series of awards that recognise innovative approaches and solutions, which also address societal and environmental challenges.

New shoots: Initial learnings from our Language Co-Creation pilot workshops

In late August, we piloted our forest language co-creation workshop, both online and in person at Puistokatu 4. These sessions were rich in learnings, fostering relational and more-than-human conversations.

Participants took imaginative journeys into forests, identified shared experiences, and co-created words to describe them. The workshops sparked critical discussions on language's role in sustainability, including how to empower without cultural appropriation and use new language to shift paradigms and challenge extractive worldviews.

Unfortunately our funding for this work has now come to an end - though we had many requests for further workshops and development of our co-created dictionary.

Our collective member policy designer Anni Leppänen is the conference chair for International Design in Government conference 2024 taking place in Helsinki, Finland next week.

The conference will explore how to push systems change and emerging futures approaches in government, and will be held in Helsinki in the first week of October.

Sunshine: A dose of energy, uplift and hope

Each newsletter we want to share something that has given our community some sunshine in the past month - nurturing our hopefulness and balancing the doom and gloom of the world.

This month we have been hugely inspired by Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s recently launched Collective Imagination Practices toolkit.

As active members of the Collective Imagination Practice Community (supported by JRF), and active developers of imagination as a professional practice, we’ve been eagerly awaiting this launch. It is full of mesmerising imagination tools and knowledge that touch on themes of embodied approaches, decolonialisation, more-than-human voices, and more.
